REGULATIONS - NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Preamble

In all matters concerning the organisation and management of these Championships, jurisdiction rests solely with DARTS SOUTH AFRICA represented by its National Management Council who shall act as the Tournament Committee. Specific organisational assistance may be delegated to the Province in whose area the Event is played.  Other assistance may also be delegated. (DSA Constitution Article 9)

All playing matters are governed by the Official Playing Rules of Darts South Africa and these Championship Regulations. The Tournament Director and Women’s Tournament Co-Ordinator shall decide the interpretation of the Playing Rules or Championship Regulations.  The Tournament Committee may be consulted whose decision shall be final and binding. This procedure will apply to any other matter not specifically covered by the Playing Rules and Championship Regulations. Should any ruling require a change to the Rules and/or Regulations, it will be referred to a General Council meeting for a decision.

Competition Regulation

1. Events & Playing Formats

1.1 Inter-Provincial Team Events for Men and Women

  1. Provinces are entitled to enter one (1) team in each event and may register a maximum of 6 players per team.
  2. Each event is played on a league (round robin) system for 4-player teams.
  3. A match consists of 16 games each for a score of 501.
  4. All 16 games must be played
  5. No substations are permitted during the playing of a match.
  6. The Order of Play is (the first named team’s player on the left)

  7. Tie-breaker – In the event of a tie (8-8), a tiebreaker game (as per Rule 3) shall be played to decide the winner.
  8. All matches shall be played over two boards and the playing order shall be strictly followed.  The next round of games may not be started before both games of the previous round are completed.
  9. There shall be a minimum delay between games.  Slow play may be penalised by the Tournament Director or Women's Tournament Co-ordinator.

1.2 Inter-District Team Events for Men

  • Districts are entitled to enter one (1) team each and may register a maximum of 8 players.
  • The event is played on a league (round robin) system for 6-player teams. The event may be played in sections as in Rule 2.
  • Each match consists of 36 Singles games each for a score of 501.
  • All 36 games must be played.
  • The Order of Play is (the first named team’s player on the left)

1.4 SA Closed Singles and Pairs for Men and Women

    • Entry into these events is restricted to the players registered by their respective Province and/or District to play in these National Championships.
    • Each Event is played on a knockout system.
    • All matches are played best of 3 games except for the Semi-Finals that are played best-of-5 games and the Finals that are played best of 7 games.
    • All games are for a score of 501.
    • Players selected for their Province may be seeded into the second round of any of these Events.

2. Team Event Sections

2.1 Team Events may be played in Pools depending on the number of teams entered in the     Event, the capacity of the playing facility and the time available to play the Event 

2.2 In applying Rule 2.1, the Tournament Director (Men) and Women's Tournament Co-ordinator will decide on the appropriate number of Sections and place teams in Pools based on their playing achievements in the previous year’s Event.

2.3  Teams absent in the previous year may be placed in the highest numbered Pool unless there is sound, justifiable reason being placed elsewhere but never in Pool 1 or 2.

2.4 New teams will play in the highest numbered Pool.

2.5 Pool participants in the immediately following National Championships will be named in the debriefing Report of the event to be circulated at least 30 days after the Championships. Participating associations have 7 (seven) days in which to lodge a written Appeal.  The National Executive Committee whose decision shall be final and binding shall consider such Appeal.

3. Determining the Throwing Order  and Scoring Responsibility

3.1 The Team Captains shall throw for the centre “bull” to decide the throwing order.

3.2 The first named (home) Team Captain shall throw first.

3.3 The winner of the “bull” shoot throws first in the odd numbered Legs. The loser throws first in the even numbered Legs.

3.4 The winner of the “bull” shoot selects a board on which his/her team will score all games in the match.  The loser will score on the other board.

4. Match Tie-Breaker

In all cases of a tie in a Team Event match, a tiebreaker game of 501 shall be played to decide the winner of the match as follows:

4.1 The Team Captain of each side shall nominate a player to contest a single tiebreaker game for a score of 501.

4.2 This tiebreaker game shall be played immediately following the playing of the last game without any undue delay that may cause the match to run over the time limit.

4.3 The tie breaker game will only decide the winner of the match and shall not qualify for aggregate game points.

4.4 A "bull" shoot shall decide the throwing order in a tiebreaker game.  The team that won the right to throw first in the match shall throw first for the “bull”.  The dart nearest the “bull” shall throw first. If both darts are judged equal then the players shall throw again, in the reverse throwing order.  The process shall continue until a decision on who will throw first is made.

Practice Darts

5.1 Each player is entitled to 6 (six) practice darts on the assigned match board immediately prior to the start of match play.

5.2 At no other time during the playing of a match may practice darts be thrown by any player.

5.3 Practice darts may not be thrown on any dartboard within the playing area once official matches have commenced.

5.4 Practice boards for the exclusive use of official players are provided outside the official playing area.

6. Match times

6.1 The starting times of matches must be strictly adhered to.

6.2 Team Event matches must be completed within 1¾ hours (105 minutes).

6.3 Where a match starts on time but is incomplete at the cut-off time, the score at the cut-off time shall be the final result.  The winning team shall be awarded 3 (three) match points and both teams will be awarded the game points earned.

6.4 Where a team delays the start of a match and the match is incomplete at the cut-off time, the defaulting team shall forfeit the rest of the game points to their opponents.  Whatever the match result (including the forfeited games), this result will stand and the match points awarded accordingly.

6.5 Where a team deliberately delays play to influence a result, the Team Manager of the opposing side must immediately call the Tournament Referee who shall appropriately penalise the defaulters.  This penalty could be the forfeiture of game/s. if the match is incomplete at the cut-off time; Rule 6.4 will be applied.

7. Allocation of Points

Team Managers are required to return fully completed Scoresheets/cards, together with any other supporting statistical information, to the Control Center.

7.1 Log points will be awarded as follows:  3 (three) points for an outright win, 2 (two) points for a tiebreaker win and 1 (one) point for losing a tiebreaker.

7.2 Game points will be awarded according to games won.

7.3 In the event of a tie on log points, aggregate game points will be used to decide the winner.

7.4 In the event of a tie on game points, the winner will be decided by a Section tiebreaker game, best of 3 Legs each for a score of 501.  One nominated player from each team will contest this tiebreaker game.  The Captains shall nominate the

7.5 If more than 2 (two) teams are level on log and aggregate game points, the three nominated players will play-off, best of 3 (three) Legs each for a score of 501.  A draw will decide the order of the matches.

8. Record-keeping and Match Officials

8.1 Team Managers are solely responsible for the proper and accurate completion of scoresheets which they must return to the Championship Control Centre immediately after the match is completed and signed-off by both teams.

8.2 All scores of 180 must be recorded on the appropriate form and returned to the    Championships Control Centre. No undeclared or late claims will be considered.

8.3 A 9 dart 501 game must be stopped immediately and the score to remain on the scoreboard.  A Tournament Official must be called to verify the scores and an  official claim must be completed signed by the Tournament Official and 2  witnesses.

8.4 Match Officials to supervise any of the Pools or to do duty in the Stage Finals may only be appointed by the Tournament Committee or the Tournament Director and Women’s Tournament Co-ordinator. These Match Officials are directly responsible to the Tournament Director and/or Women’s Tournament Co-ordinator and/or Tournament Committee and they may not delegate their responsibilities without the prior approval of at least 2 Tournament Officials.

9. Awards

9.1 The winner of each Event or Section will be awarded a Floating Trophy.

9.2 Gold medals will be awarded to all Champions.

9.3 Silver medals will be awarded to all runners-up.

9.4 All participating teams are required to attend the Prize giving. Absentees shall    forfeit their right to any Award due to them.

9.5 Floating trophies shall be returned on the first day of the immediately following  National Championships, at the playing venue and at a time stipulated by DSA. It is accepted that all trophies are presented in the very best good condition.  Trophies must be returned in that same good order and condition and engraved with the year and name of the previous year’s Champion/s (Associations are entitled to a refund of  the cost of engraving, on presentation of a receipt)

10. Dress Code and Good Order

10.1 All participating teams and officials must be neatly attired in uniform dress.

10.2 T-shirts, denim trousers/slacks, shorts, takkies, sandals, canvas shoes, headgear and clothing displaying liquor brands other than the sponsors, Castle Lager, are   not allowed.

10.3 Advertising on playing uniform is restricted to the breast pocket and sleeves of  the playing shirt. 

10.4 All advertising on playing attire requires the prior approval of Darts South Africa  who reserves the right to refuse any advertising that violates any sponsorship  agreement or is considered inappropriate for the event.  The General Council or  National Executive Committee can only deal with appeals against any such decision.

10.5 Smoking and the drinking of alcoholic drinks are not allowed in the playing venue.

10.6 Reasonable silence must be observed while matches are in progress.

11. General

11.1 Players may not leave the playing area while a match is in progress     without the prior consent of the opposing Team Captain. A player absent without  this consent can forfeit his/her game.

11.2     Undue noise, offensive language and gestures and any other form of unsportsmanlike behaviour is unacceptable. Reported offences will be referred for disciplinary action and appropriate punishment.

11.3 Smoking, drinking and eating in the playing area is not allowed.

11.4 In all Championship matters, except for the Open events, only Team Managers   may approach the Tournament Director (Men), Women’s Tournament Co-ordinator (Women) or Tournament Officials with any query or dispute.
