DARTS ON THE OFFENSIVE IN SOUTH AFRICA

The South African National Darts Championships will be held at Vista University, Bloemfontein, Free State from Monday 10 to Saturday 15 July 2006.  Our Youth Nationals will also be played in Bloemfontein from 13 to 15 July 2006.

We have also launched a country-wide initiative to grow and develop darts.  The programme enjoys financial support from our National Lottery, our Government, the Winmau Dartboard Company, and Sportsman's Warehouse (a major local sports equipment retailer).

The programme is titled OPERATION BULLSEYE and focuses on the following projects:

Let's Play Darts - A community-driven project that introduces the game to adults and the disabled and encourages them to join local leagues.

Adopt A School - Local clubs and associations are encouraged to engage with schools in their area. Learners are introduced to the basics with special attention on the skills of the game, the importance of calculations, discipline, substance abuse (drugs) and the rules of the game.

Aiming For Tops - An excellence  programme for our senior players who are coached on improving their playing skills with the objective of maintaining our No.1 ranking in Zone VI (Southern Africa) and internationally.

RAP - This Responsible Administration Project provides training for officials and organisers in various administrative and technical functions.  The objective is to raise organisational practice and broaden our base of match officials.

In the Western (Cape Town) we have a group of blind darts players and a group who blow darts.  We are working with the National body for disabled sport - DISSA - to increase the playing numbers amongst the disabled.

Together with Winmau and Sportsman's Warehouse we are setting-up in-store promotions involving our Protea (national) players.  The public will be invited to challenge these players and encouraged to join a local league.  With the same sponsors, we will be launching a national circuit of Classic tournaments (a 1st for SA) soon after our National Championships.  These are just some of the projects that we hope will promote the sport and improve excellence.
